Hornet Sports – Week of April 17

Updates for the week of April 17

Softball

The Lady Hornets are off to a great start. The season began with a win at home against the Mountaineers, 16-0, followed by a win at Albemarle 19-0. The team then beat King George on the road 9-4, before falling to Riverbend 4-2. Regrouping, Orange beat William Monroe in Greene 11-0 April 2 before falling to Louisa at home 9-1 April 3. The game on April 14 against Western Albemarle went to a 2-2 tie before being postponed due to weather. The Hornets were scheduled to visit Fluvanna Thursday at 7 p.m. before hosting Goochland Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Baseball

The Hornets are off to a rough start. The team started its season with a home loss to Madison 11-6, followed by a loss at King George 12-2 and Riverbend 6-4. Games scheduled for March 27 and 31 were cancelled due to weather. Orange hit the diamond again on April 2, losing to William Monroe 4-1, followed by a loss to Louisa 5-2. The team picked up its first win of the season April 14 at home, beating Rappahannock 10-6. The Hornets were scheduled to visit Fluvanna Thursday at 7 p.m. and host Western Albemarle Friday at 6:30 p.m. A home game will also be held April 22 at 6:30 p.m. against Goochland.

Girls Soccer

The girls soccer season got underway last month with a 4-3 loss against Albemarle followed by a win against King George 4-0. The team tied Charlottesville 3-3 March 25 and beat Eastern View 4-0 March 27. Orange lost at home against Riverbend 2-1 April 1 before beating Louisa on the road 3-0 April 3. On Monday, the team lost at Western Albemarle 1-0. The team was scheduled to host Fluvanna Thursday at 7 p.m. and visit Goochland Monday at 7 p.m.

Boys Soccer

The Hornets started the season with a 4-1 loss to Albemarle, before beating King George 1-0. The team then lost to Charlottesville 6-0 and tied Eastern View 2-2 to wrap up March play. April play began with an 8-0 win against Louisa followed by a 1-1 tie against Western Albemarle. Orange was scheduled to visit Fluvanna Thursday and will host Goochland Monday at 7 p.m.

Track

The outdoor track season began last month with the Charles City Invitational. Cemadric Washington finished third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.52. David Norman finished first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.81. The boys 4×100 meter relay team finished first with a time of 44.44. Brandon Testa placed first in the shot put with a distance of 50-10.5. For the girls, Kayla Ash finished first in the long jump with a distance of 16-3.5. 

Up next was the Patriot Invitational. Amaree Bennett finished third in the boys high jump with a height of 6-0. Norman finished first in the long jump with a distance of 22-0 and first in the triple jump with a distance of 45-10. Brandon Testa finished second in the shot put with a distance of 52-4. None of the Hornet girls placed in the top three.

The Woodberry Forest Mini-Meet was held April 4. Washington finished second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.15. Charles Harrison II finished first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:37.16. Dean Davis placed first in the 3200 meter run with a time of 13:06.52. Bennett placed first in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 18.35, first in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 45.75 and second in the high jump with a height of 5-6. The boys 4×100 meter relay team finished second with a time of 44.08; the 4×400 team third with a time of 3:47.20 and the 4×800 team first with a time of 9:45.37. Norman finished third in the long jump with a distance of 20-7.5 and first in the triple jump with a distance of 46-2. Testa finished second in the discus with a distance of 131-2.5 and first in the shot put with a distance of 55-2.25. For the girls, Kelis Jones finished third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:49.24 and second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 6:01.26. Naomi Cropp finished third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19.13 and second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 54.37. Talisa Kamercloud finished third in the long jump with a distance of 14-4 and third in the triple jump with a distance of 28-4.5. Laila Covington finished third in the discus with a distance of 82-11. Laylianah McBrayer finished first in the shot put with a distance of 31-2.5.

Up next for the Hornets is the Gainesville Cardinal Classic Saturday and the Orange County Quad Wednesday.

Boys Lacrosse

The boys lacrosse team started the season with a 13-2 win against Culpeper, followed by a 9-8 loss to Riverbend. The Hornets rounded out March play with a 9-8 loss to Charlottesville and a 10-9 loss to Liberty. The team lost Tuesday to James Monroe 15-9 and will travel to Fluvanna Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting Goochland Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Girls Lacrosse

The girls lacrosse team started the season with a 16-6 loss at Riverbend before beating Charlottesville 19-7. The team then beat Liberty 11-4. On Tuesday, the team lost on the road against James Monroe 17-10. The team is scheduled to host Fluvanna Friday at 7 p.m. and visit Goochland Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Boys Tennis

The Hornets got off to a rough start on the tennis court last month. They lost to Eastern View at home 7-2 and to Albemarle on the road 9-0. The team picked it up this month, winning against Liberty 5-4 April 2 and against Louisa 8-1 April 3. On Monday, Orange lost to Western Albemarle 9-0. The team was scheduled to visit Charlottesville Wednesday and Fluvanna Thursday. The team will host Goochland Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and visit Monticello Thursday at 5 p.m.

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team lost two in March, falling 5-4 at Eastern View and 9-0 against Albemarle. The team beat Liberty 8-1 April 2 and Louisa 9-0 April 3. On Monday, the Hornets lost 9-0 at Western Albemarle. The team was scheduled to host Charlottesville Wednesday and Fluvanna Thursday at 5 p.m. before visiting Goochland Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and hosting Monticello Thursday at 5 p.m.
