The Orange County School Board will interview potential candidates to fill the District 4 board vacancy this week.
On Tuesday, the board announced a special called meeting to be held Thursday at 10 a.m. Immediately following roll call, the board will enter into a closed session for the purpose of interviewing applicants to fill the unexpired term of former District 4 board member Chelsea Quintern. Quintern resigned from the board in March after her son was diagnosed with lymphoma.
Five qualified applicants will be interviewed for the position. Two additional applicants were deemed ineligible. Among the qualified applicants is Locust Grove resident O’Brian Martin. The 21-year-old Orange County High School graduate and Virginia Tech student has qualified to be on the ballot for the District 4 seat this November. The other applicants are unknown, but their names will be released after the meeting. According to school board clerk Laura Byram this was done in case someone changed their mind and decided to withdraw.
The board will host a public hearing regarding the vacancy May 12 with the appointment taking place one week later.
