Softball coach arrested on child sexual abuse charges

Coaches for GCPS, OC Elite 8U

A youth sports coach has been arrested for the sexual abuse of a minor.

According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, on Aug. 24, the investigation division received a report of sexual abuse involving a juvenile. After an investigation, warrants were obtained Aug. 28 for Anthony Wayne Ryder of Ruckersville. Ryder has been charged with aggravated sexual battery with a child between 13 and 17 years old. He is being held at Central Virginia Regional Jail.

Ryder was a junior varsity softball coach for Greene County Public Schools during the spring 2025 season. The alleged offense is not connected to his coaching duties and he is no longer associated with the school division. Ryder has also been a coach for Orange County Elite 8U Softball. It’s unknown if he’s still involved with the team.

A bond hearing scheduled for Wednesday was continued to Thursday afternoon.

Anyone with information regarding this case or any other related offenses is encouraged to contact Greene County Sheriff’s Office Captain Kevin Freid at (434) 566-2813.
