A hiker was rescued on Old Rag Sunday afternoon.

According to the Virginia State Police, a hiker suffered a head injury on the popular hike which begins in Etlan and summits in Shenandoah National Park. At approximately 11:10 a.m., Med-Flight 1, which is based at the Chesterfield County Airport, received the emergency call and began preparing to fly approximately 80 nautical miles to the rescue site.
Upon arrival, the team began an initial hoist which proved unsuccessful due to wind conditions. A second attempt from a different direction and altitude prevailed. A Chesterfield County Fire and EMS Flight Paramedic was lowered to the ground and secured the hiker who then lifted to the helicopter and flown to UVa Medical Center.
Med-Flight 1 is a joint effort between Virginia State Police pilots and paramedics from the Chesterfield County Fire and EMS Department. The Med-Flight 1 program celebrated its 42nd anniversary April 1.
