Two locals will be honored for their contributions to education next month.

The Orange County Education Foundation will honor community member Deanne Marshall and retired educator Rod Hawkins at the organization’s 2026 Celebration of Education Dinner Oct. 1, 5-8 p.m. at the Pavilion on Lakeland Farm. The annual event brings together educators, alumni, business leaders, families and community sponsors to celebrate those whose dedication has strengthened education throughout Orange County while also raising funds for scholarships, teacher innovation grants and educational opportunities for students. The foundation supports both teachers and students in the county.

Marshall has been chosen as this year’s Friend of Education Award recipient. The award is given to an individual, business or organization that has made an exceptional contribution to education in Orange County. Marshall started Orange County Books and Beyond (OCBB), a nonprofit serving as the local sponsor for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library which mails high-quality, age-appropriate books to children 5 and under. Marshall’s organization is the first Imagination Library affiliate to serve Orange County and the immediate surrounding area.
Hawkins, a retired educator and member of the Orange County School Board, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. He spent 42 years as a teacher, also coaching football, wrestling and track. In addition to being honored, Hawkins will also present a look back at the history of education in the county, highlighting the people, schools and milestones that have shaped generations of local learners.
Superintendent Dan Hornick will share his vision for the future of local education, discussing opportunities, innovation and the continued commitment to preparing every student for success.
Tickets are $50 with a special discount for Orange County Public Schools personnel.
