Madison Award winner chosen

Essie Berry to be honored

Essie Berry has been chosen as this year’s Madison Award Winner.

Presented annually by the Madison Lions Club, the Madison Award recognizes sustained, unpaid voluntary community service in the county. Nominations are submitted via letter by local individuals and organizations with each then casting a vote for their chosen winner. The award has been given since 1991, except for 2020-2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Berry serves in a variety of organizations including the Madison County Historical Society and Madison County Aging Together. She is the chair of the Madison County Fair and was named the Virginia Association of Fairs, Inc. Fair Person of the Year in 2019. She represented Madison County on the Germanna Community College Board.

Berry will be honored as the recipient of the Madison Award during a dinner May 19 at Graves Mountain Lodge. A social time will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The cost is $35 per person. Anyone wishing to attend can RSVP to Lion Bud Kreh at (540) 829-3144 or budkreh@gmail.com by May 15.
