According to law enforcement, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit received information regarding an individual who had downloaded images of a sexual nature involving juveniles. An investigation ensued and a search warrant was issued for Steven Kyle Edward Smith, 33, of Madison County and Ruckersville.
A search warrant was executed Friday, March 14 at Smith’s temporary residence in Madison County by members of both the Madison and Greene county sheriff’s offices. Smith was not at the residence, but was later located in the Town of Culpeper. He was arrested and charged with possession, reproduction, distribution, solicitation and facilitation of child pornography and taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship. Both charges are from Greene County, but additional charges are expected from both Greene and surrounding counties. Smith is being held without bond at the Central Virginia Regional Jail. The investigation is ongoing.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office ICAC unit urges parents to be involved in their children’s computer and internet usage and ensure children know about internet safety and the dangers of online predators. Parents are also urged to not allow children to have electronic devices in their rooms at nighttime. For more internet safety tips, visit www.sovaicac.org.
