Tyler James Magill, 30, of King George has been arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder; aggravated malicious wounding with victim severely injured; use of a firearm in the commission of a felony-first offense; and five counts of maliciously shooting at an occupied vehicle.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred during the afternoon hours of Monday, May 19. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting on Germanna Highway (Rt. 3) in the area of Goodwin Drive. A patrol deputy on westbound Rt. 3 spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and initiated a stop. The deputy was able to detain the suspect. Meanwhile, deputies responded to the intersection of Goodwin Drive and located a victim suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Multiple agencies responded to assist with medical treatment, traffic control and securing the scene during the active investigation. Portions of both eastbound and westbound Rt. 3 were closed for several hours with eastbound traffic detoured via Flat Run Road to Rt. 20. VDOT assisted with traffic control. Lake of the Woods residents entered their neighborhood via the back gate during the closure.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office thanks the Culpeper and Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Offices, Virginia State Police, Orange County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office, Lake of the Woods Fire and Rescue, County of Orange Fire and EMS, Orange County Communications Center, VDOT and Lake of the Woods Security for their response and support. According to Orange County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Lt. Adam Schienschang, “all agencies worked seamlessly together to apprehend the suspect, provide immediate aid, investigate the crime scene, conduct interviews, manage traffic, ensure public safety, and bring the situation to a resolution.” The public is also thanked for its cooperation and patience in dealing with the related traffic delays.

Magill is being held without bond at the Central Virginia Regional Jail. He is expected to appear in Orange County General District Court May 21.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have relevant information including car dash camera footage or cell phone video footage is asked to contact investigator L. Griffith at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office by calling (540) 672-1200.
