The Declaration of Independence was read publicly on the courthouse steps in Orange County earlier this month.
The reading, held July 8, was part of a nationwide synchronized reading of the country’s founding document, 250 years after it was first publicly read in Philadelphia. Although July 4 is considered Independence Day, the declaration was not presented until four days later once it had been printed.
Approximately 125 people showed up to the Orange County Courthouse to hear the reading which also included the tolling of the Orange Baptist Church Bell, a fife and drum trio and an honor guard. Reenactor Marc Holma had the honor of reading the document.
The local event was organized by the Orange County Historical Society and the James Madison Museum of Orange County Heritage.
