OCL: TEEN ART: CHARACTER CREATIONS

Character creations will be Thursday, June 12 at Gordonsville and Friday, June 13 at Orange as part of the summer reading program. Teen art sessions, open to sixth through 12th grades, start at 2 p.m. and are limited to 20 participants, first come, first served.

MCL: WILDLIFE CENTER

The Wildlife Center will be at the Madison County Library June 13 at 11 a.m. as part of the summer reading program. The center will share information about some of the animals currently under its care. Learn facts about a mammal, a reptile and a bird and get to see them up close.

Saturday, June 14

THUNDER IN THE MOUNTAINS

The American Legion Post 157 Riders will sponsor “Thunder in the Mountains,” a poker run June 14 to benefit Bowl for Seniors serving the Madison, Fauquier, Culpeper, Orange and Rappahannock Senior Centers. Registration will be held 9-10:30 a.m. at the Madison Senior Center, 1480 N. Main Street, Madison with kickstands up at 11 a.m. Gospel music will be provided 10-11:30 a.m. with classic rock by a DJ 1-6 p.m. Lunch for sale includes BBQ, baked beans, coleslaw and hotdogs with all the fixings. Cars and trucks welcome. Rain date is June 15. The cost is $20 per rider, $10 per passenger and $5 per hand. RAD SELF-DEFENSE CLASS

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office will host a RAD Self-Defense Course for women June 16-19, 6-10 p.m. at the Madison County Firehouse, 1223 N. Main Street, Madison. RAD stands for Rape, Aggression, Defense Systems and is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques primarily for women, focusing on awareness, prevention, risk reduction and hands-on defense training. The class is open to women ages 14 and older; juveniles must have a signed guardian consent form submitted to participate. OCL: SCHOOL AGE CRAFTS: PERLER BEADS

Perler beads will be at the Wilderness Library Monday, June 16 at the Wilderness Library and Friday, June 20 at both the Orange and Gordonsville libraries as part of the summer reading program. School age crafts, open to ages kindergarten through fifth grade, start at 2 p.m.

FBC VBS

Fellowship Baptist Church, Madison, will host Vacation Bible School June 16-20, 6:30-8:30 p.m. for children in grades kindergarten through 12th. Parent night will be held Friday. If needing transportation, contact bus director David Brooks at (540) 226-9252.

BBC VBS

Bethel Baptist Church, 6262 Hoover Road, Reva, will host Vacation Bible School June 16-20, 6:15-8:30 p.m. The children’s program and picnic lunch will be held June 21. The theme is “Magnified: Discovering the Bigness of God in the Smallest of Things.”

OCL: EARTHQUEST

Earthquest: Birds of Prey, a family performance, will be held at Locust Grove Middle School Tuesday, June 17, 2-4 p.m., at Gordon-Barbour Elementary School Wednesday, June 18, 1-2 p.m. and at Orange Elementary School Wednesday, June 18, 3:15-4:15 p.m. as part of the summer reading program.

MCL: MAKE IT AND TAKE IT ART PROJECTS

Make it and take it art projects will be at the Madison County Library Gazebo June 18 at 11 a.m. as part of the summer reading program. Kids who sign up will get to either decorate an umbrella or decorate and build a wind-powered sailboat. Sign up by calling the library at (540) 948-4720 or emailing froebuck@madisoncountyvalibrary.org with the number of school-age children attending and which art activity is preferred.

JUNETEENTH

The Orange County African American Historical Society will host Juneteenth, a free community celebration, June 19, 12-2 p.m. at the African American Commemorative Park, corner of Church and Chapman Street. Enjoy music, dance and stories.

Friday, June 20

SUMMER KICK OFF

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office will host a summer kick off June 20, 5-8 p.m. at Booster Park. The event will begin with a one mile fun run, followed by food and merchandise vendors, craft tables, K-9 demonstrations, first responder vehicles, adoptable animals from the animal shelter and more. This is a free, family-friendly event.

Saturday, June 21

PANCAKE FUNDRAISER

The Rotary Club of Orange will host a pancake fundraiser June 21, 7-10 a.m. at 235 Warren Street, Orange to raise funds for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Breakfast is $5 per person.

THUNDER IN ORANGE

The Thunder in Orange Truck and Tractor Pull will be held June 21 at 6 p.m. at the Orange County Fairgrounds, 133 Fairground Road, Orange. Tickets are $15; children 9 and under are free. Gates will open at 4 p.m. Pulling classes include 10,000 super pro farm; super modified twd trucks; 11,000 altered farm; 6,300 fwd trucks; 8,000 hot street diesel; 12,000 hot stock and 15,000 farm. BUMC BBQ CHICKEN DINNER

Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 23258 Village Road, Unionville will host a BBQ chicken dinner June 21, 4:30-7:30 p.m. Enjoy a half-chicken or pieces with delicious sides. Eat in or take out. The price is $15 for ages 12 and up, $5 for 11 and under, $10 for military and first responders and $12 for take out.

LIONS ANNIVERSARY DINNER

The Madison County Lions Club is celebrating 86 years of service to Madison County. Enjoy an afternoon of fellowship and reminiscing with a casual meal June 21, 4-7 p.m. at George James Community Center, Radiant. The cost is $20 per person for the meal, special program and a commemorative pin. The club is looking for former members, families of former members and anyone in Madison impacted by the club. The Mini Menagerie Petting Zoo will have its animal crew at the Wilderness Library Monday, June 23, 10 a.m. to noon, the Orange Library Tuesday, June 24, 10 a.m. to noon and the Gordonsville Library Wednesday, June 25, 10 a.m. to noon. as part of the summer reading program.

MVC VBS

Mountain View Chapel will host Vacation Bible School June 23-27, 6-8:30 p.m. at Good Hope Baptist Church, 2930 Beautiful Run Road, Radiant. The theme is “True North: Trusting Jesus in a Wild World.”

MCL: BRIGHT STAR THEATER

The Bright Star Theater will be at the Madison County Library June 24 at 11 a.m. as part of the summer reading program. The group will perform “The Wizard of Oz.”

MCL: AMAZING TEACHER MAGICIAN

The Amazing Teacher Magician Steve Somers will be at the Madison County Library July 1 at 11 a.m. as part of the summer reading program. He will perform a Color Your World Magic Show.

PLAYIN’ IN THE PARK

Orange County Parks and Recreation will host its annual Playin’ in the Park Fourth of July celebration Thursday, July 3 at 5 p.m. at Booster Park. Enjoy live music by the Yurasits Family and Dave Goodrich and touch-a-truck. Food trucks will be on-site and fireworks begin at dark. Free admission; family-friendly event. Bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs; alcohol prohibited. Pets must be leashed at all times.

MADISON COUNTY JULY 4TH CELEBRATION

The annual Madison County Fourth of July Celebration at Graves Mountain Farm and Lodges will be held July 4, 4-8 p.m. Admission is free; the Madison County Volunteer Fire Company will accept donations for parking. There will be food available, vendors, pony rides and more, plus fireworks at dark.

Minecraft mosaics will be at the Wilderness Library Monday, July 7, Thursday, July 10 at the Gordonsville Library and Friday, July 11 at the Orange Library as part of the summer reading program. School age crafts, open to ages kindergarten through fifth grade, start at 2 p.m.

MCL: UNCLE HENRY

Uncle Henry will be at the Madison County Library July 8, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. as part of the summer reading program. He will turn the library into a museum of sorts with his see and touch nature gallery. Henry and Leila will bring a display of more than 1,100 items including butterflies, mammals, fossils, sea life and more.

OCL: MAGICIAN JONATHAN AUSTIN

Magician Jonathan Austin will perform Tuesday, July 8, 3-4 p.m. at Locust Grove Middle School; Wednesday, July 9, 1-2 p.m. at Gordon-Barbour Elementary School and Wednesday, July 9, 3:15-4:15 p.m. at Orange Elementary School as part of the summer reading program.

“A Mid-Summer Dream: Art by John and Lena Murray” will be held at the Blue Ridge Studio of Fine Arts June 14, 4-7 p.m. and June 15, 1-5 p.m. View new art by John and Lena Murray including oil paintings and terracotta sculptures. Refreshments will be served.

Fangs, Frogs and More will be presented Tuesday, July 15, 3-4 p.m. at Locust Grove Middle School; Wednesday, July 16, 1-2 p.m. at Gordon-Barbour Elementary School and Wednesday, July 16, 3:15-4:15 p.m. at Orange Elementary School as part of the summer reading program.

OCSO HOME RUN DERBY

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office will host a home run derby July 17 at Booster Park, 11177 Bloomsbury Road, Orange. There will be two divisions–kids at 4:30 p.m. and adults (men’s and women’s) at 6 p.m. The entry fee is $10 for children and $20 for adults; cash or check only. Children will have 20 swings each with the fence line adjusted per age group; no time limit; hitting from home plate. Adults will have 20 softball swings per participant; no time limit; hitting from home plate. Prizes include a championship trophy and a swag-filled gift bag for each division winner. Ballpark concessions will be available. Proceeds benefit the sheriff’s office community programs.

MCL: TRAVELIN’ JACK & CO.

Travelin’ Jack & Co. will be at the Madison County Library July 22 at 11 a.m. as part of the summer reading program. The folktales Christopher Hudert offers with puppets include a Jack tale, a slave-story song and a morality tale that reflect the traditional nature and humor of early American storytelling.

MCL: END OF SUMMER BLOWOUT

The Madison County Library will host its end of summer blowout July 23, 10 a.m. to noon as part of the summer reading program. Enjoy two giant water slides, snow cones, tattoos, face painting and a lot of fun.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office will host a National Night Out event Aug. 5, 5-8 p.m. at Hoover Ridge Park.

Saturday, Aug. 9

MCPS BACK TO SCHOOL CARNIVAL

Madison County Public Schools will host a back to school carnival Aug. 9, 9 a.m. to noon at the Young Farmer’s Grounds. Enjoy a fun-filled event to send students off into a wonderful new school year.

YOUTH RALLY FOR JESUS

The Madison County Historical Society’s museum at 414 N. Main Street, Madison, announces a new exhibit featuring artifacts and photographs from the historic Hunton Hotel in Madison.
