Emily Bartholomew, a 2025 graduate of Madison County High School (MCHS), has been awarded the Honorable Edward D. Berry Memorial Scholarship by the Madison County Democratic Committee (MCDC). The $1,000 scholarship recognizes Bartholomew’s achievements in academics, student leadership, citizenship, and community service.
A first-generation college student, Bartholomew will attend James Madison University, where she plans to study elementary education. She hopes to return to Madison County and teach at the Madison County Primary School.
At MCHS, Bartholomew served as part of the Principal’s Cabinet, as a member of the Beta Club, and as the Senior Class Public Relations Representative. She participated for two years in the school’s Teachers for Tomorrow program, and was selected as the April 2025 Senior of the Month.
“I am confident that Emily will continue to work diligently toward the goals she has set for herself,” Valerie D. Miller, M.Ed., MCHS school counselor, stated. “She has a bright future as an educator ahead of her.”
“We are pleased to award our first Honorable Edward D. Berry Memorial Scholarship to such a deserving student,” MCDC Chair Annette Hyde said. “Ed Berry loved Madison County and served this community throughout his life. Emily plans to return home to serve Madison County as well. Her contributions as an educator will be invaluable.”
Berry, who passed away in 2023, was a lifelong resident of Madison County and a former chair of the Madison County Democratic Committee. He served for many years as a juvenile and domestic relations district court judge. Berry was active in the Madison County Historical Society and volunteered each year at the Madison County Fair.
