2026 class announced

Second Hall of Fame class to be inducted in October

The second class of inductees into the Madison County High School Mountaineers Athletic Hall of Fame have been chosen.

The Hall of Fame, created in 2025, is a way to honor and recognize outstanding athletes and coaches who have made a lasting impact on the school and the community. A committee composed of the MCHS Principal or Assistant Principal, the athletic director, two coaches–one each from male and female sports, a school board member and eight at-large members select the inductees from nominations submitted by the community. The nominations for the class were due in spring.

According to the committee, the 2026 inductees have “made significant impacts on their teams and the community, embodying the spirit and tradition of Madison athletics. Their contributions continue to inspire current and future generations of athletes.”

The inductees are: Jack Berry, class of 1972; Juan Brown, class of 2000; Leon Hill, class of 1987; Marissa Shifflette, class of 1985; Ron Medley, class of 1973; Mike Styles, class of 1977; Ellie Tanner, class of 1996; Logan Terrell, class of 2010; Walter Strother, class of 1978; Greg Utz, class of 1974; and the 1973 MCHS Football Team.

To be considered for the Hall of Fame, a candidate’s most recent participation in an MCHS sport must have occurred 10 or more years prior. Committee members are ineligible while serving. Nominees can be athletes, coaches, administrators or contributors who, according to the committee bylaws, “have brought pride and distinction to MCHS.” Current coaches are eligible. Inductees will be recognized during halftime of the Oct. 2 varsity football game at Eddie Dean Field with a formal induction dinner held Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. in the Wetsel Middle School Gym. Tickets for the dinner are $50 per person and include a catered meal and presentation of inductees.

The second class follows after the inaugural class was inducted last fall.

Tickets for the induction dinner will be available for purchase beginning Monday, Aug. 3. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Michelle Farmer at (540) 948-3785 or mfarmer@madisonschools.k12.va.us.
