The Orange County Board of Supervisors has a new chairman.
The board held its annual reorganizational meeting Monday evening, welcoming newly elected District 1 Supervisor Jason Capelle. He takes over for longtime supervisor and board chairman Mark Johnson.
District 5 Supervisor Bryan Nicol was nominated as the new board chairman by District 2 Supervisor Ed Van Hoven. He was unanimously approved.
“Thank you for that vote of confidence,” Nicol said. “I look forward to working with you.”
Van Hoven was nominated by District 3 Supervisor Keith Marshall to continue in his role as vice chairman. He was unanimously approved.
County administrator Glenda Paul will remain the clerk of the board with Latoya Smith remaining as the chief deputy clerk. Meetings will continue to be held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. in the Orange County Public Safety Building Board Meeting Room except for November when the meeting will be held the third Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Lake of the Woods Clubhouse. In December, meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays at 5 p.m.
As for committee assignments, Johnson will remain as the board’s historian advisor. Capelle will serve as the Town of Gordonsville, tourism advisory committee, school board and planning commission liaisons and on the health center commission. As chairman, Nicol will serve on the local emergency planning commission, as well as keeping his roles on the Central Virginia Regional Jail Authority, the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission, Rappahannock River Basin Commission, the water subcommittee and the workforce council of local elected officials. He is also liaison to the economic development authority and shares the role of liaison to the Lake of the Woods Board of Directors with District 4 Supervisor Crystal Hale.
Hale also serves on the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission and water subcommittee and as liaison to the litter control committee and social services advisory board. Marshall serves on the Rapidan Service Authority Board of Members and as liaison to the Orange Downtown Alliance, Orange Town Council, school board and volunteer fire chief’s association. Van Hoven has the least appointments, serving on the Lake Anna Advisory Committee and as liaison to the economic development authority.
All five supervisors serve on the broadband authority.
