VDOT design public hearing next week

Residents able to make comments on proposed Pratts roundabout

A public hearing next week will focus on the proposed roundabout in Pratts.

The project would reconstruct the existing intersection of Rt. 230, Orange Road, Rt. 231, S. Blue Ridge Turnpike, and Rt. 687, Fairground Road, into a four-leg, single-lane roundabout. According to VDOT, the reconstruction would improve safety and traffic flow by reducing potential crash points and lowering vehicle speeds. The area has been the site of several accidents including at least one fatality. As part of the project, the entrances immediately adjacent to the roundabout will be converted to right-in/right-out only and the existing slip ramp from westbound Rt. 230 to Rt. 687 will be eliminated.

During construction of the project, there will need to be detours implemented due to a temporary closure of the intersection. Currently three detour options are being evaluated. The project will also result in the displacement of one or more families, businesses or non-profit organizations. Currently, the former State Farm office sits at the intersection as well as two apartments. On the opposite side is the post office and Flock Church. Several other parcels are noted in the design plans. Acquisition of total take parcels is anticipated to begin in October with right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation occurring during the fall of 2026.

The $11.6 million project was ranked third among FY2024 SMART Scale projects for VDOT’s Culpeper District. It was ranked 59th in the state among 393 applications.

A design public hearing on the project will be held Tuesday, Aug. 19, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Renback Barn, 8668 S. Blue Ridge Turnpike, Rochelle. Those attending the open house style hearing will be able to view the project as well as the options for detours. Oral comments may be given at the hearing. Written public comments may be submitted to David Cubbage, project manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701 or by email to david.cubbage@vdot.virginia.gov by Aug. 29. Construction of the project is anticipated to begin during the summer of 2028 with completion in early 2029.
