Madison County welcomes two new supervisors

Yowell chosen as chairman

The Madison County Board of Supervisors has a new chairman.

The board held its annual reorganizational meeting Friday morning, welcoming newly elected supervisors Mike Snider and Nancy Sharman.

For the first time in several years, the board has a new chairman. Supervisor Carty Yowell was nominated for the role by supervisor Jim Jewett and received unanimous approval. Yowell served as vice chairman for several years. He takes over the leadership position from former supervisor Clay Jackson.

“I thank you for your confidence in me,” Yowell said. “I will do my best.”

Snider then nominated Jewett for the vice chair position. It was approved unanimously.

Unchanged were the board’s regularly scheduled meeting times of 4 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month and 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month. The board also hosts a joint meeting with the planning commission the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. During the meeting, the board approved its bylaws and code of ethics.

As for committee assignments, Yowell took the lead in placing supervisors in various roles. Supervisor Jud Buchanan will continue to serve on the Blue Ridge Committee, Central Virginia Regional Jail Authority and the economic development committee. He will also serve on the parks and recreation authority, the Thomas Jefferson EMS Council and the Topping Fund committee and serve as a liaison to the historical society, the Madison County Volunteer Fire Company and the tourism committee.

Jewett will remain on the economic development committee and the piedmont workforce. He will serve on the Madison Extension Council and as liaison to the Madison County School Board, as well as the Virginia Association of Counties representative.

Yowell will continue to serve on the joint capital improvement project committee and will serve as the alternate to the Rapidan Service Authority Board of Members and the Thomas Jefferson EMS Council. He will serve on the Rappahannock Rapidan Regional Commission and the Topping Fund committee. He will be liaison to the planning commission and as chairman becomes the director of emergency management.

Snider will serve on the community policy management team, the joint capital improvement plan committee, the parks and recreation authority, the preliminary development review committee and the Rappahannock River Basin committee. He will serve as liaison to the Town of Madison, the planning commission.

Sharman will serve on the preliminary development review committee, Skyline CAP and social services board. She will be the liaison to the Town of Madison and the library board.

Later this month, the supervisors will select from among six candidates to fill two planning commission vacancies, one created by the election of Snider to the board of supervisors and the other due to James Graves, III opting to not serve an additional term. Interviews of applicants are scheduled for Jan. 13.
