Few candidates certified for local elections

School board, board of supervisor seats on November ballot

Few candidates have qualified for the November local elections in Orange and Madison counties.

In Orange County, Districts 1 and 4 will be up for election, including both the school board and board of supervisors seats. In Madison County, three supervisor seats and three school board seats are up for election.

As of last month, only Jason Capelle has completed the certification requirements to be listed on the ballot for the Orange County District 1 Supervisor seat. Current District 1 Supervisor Mark Johnson announced earlier this year that he would not be seeking reelection. Johnson has served on the board off and on since being elected in 1996. He is currently the board chair. Capelle is a longtime resident of Orange County and lives with his wife, Sunnie, on a small farm in Barboursville. He currently serves on the planning commission.

No one has qualified to be listed for the District 4 Supervisor seat which is currently held by Crystal Hale. It’s unknown if she’ll seek reelection.

For the Orange County School Board, Gordonsville resident Sid Trimmer has met the certification requirements to be listed on the ballot for the District 1 seat which is currently held by board chair Melissa Anderson. Locust Grove resident O’Brian Martin has met requirements to be listed for the District 4 seat, left vacant earlier this year by Chelsea Quintern’s resignation.

On the ballot for Gordonsville voters will be a town council member position. Cynthia Black is currently filling the unexpired term created when councilmember Ronald Brooks, III was elected as mayor.

In Madison County, incumbent Jim Jewett has met the certification requirements to seek reelection to the board of supervisors. Nancy Sharman and planning commissioner Mike Snyder have also met the requirements to be listed on the ballot for the board of supervisors. Incumbent and board chairman Clay Jackson is seeking the Republican nomination for the 62nd House of Delegates seat in the June 17 primary election and supervisor Dustin Dawson is not seeking reelection.

No one has officially been certified for the school board election, but Lauran Gordon was in the process of completing her last requirement earlier this month. It’s unknown if board members Nita Collier, Christopher Wingate and Charlie Sheads will seek reelection.

Candidates have until June 17 at 7 p.m. to file their paperwork to be listed on the upcoming November ballot.
