The Madison County Friends of the Library will be hosting its Annual Yard Sale Saturday, Oct. 10, 8 a.m. to noon on the Madison Library Lawn.
The Friends of the Library (FOL) has hosted the annual event since the fall of 2016. The organization consists of a group of dedicated volunteers led by president Heidi Sage. The group works to raise funds to support library programs, equipment, and staff appreciation not covered by the regular library budget.
“What I can tell you is that without the Friends and their efforts for us, our Summer Reading Programs would have to do with much less programming,” library director Bonnie Utz said. “We have hundreds of kids coming to our programs over the course of a summer, 800 visits last year and they read for 532 hours. Just having those kids here is sometimes enough to spark an interest in reading. It takes hours of work to coordinate something like this yard sale. This group does it year after year. They have my greatest appreciation.”
The FOL Annual Yard Sale raises money in two ways, through donated items and 12×12 space rentals. Members of the community have donated items to be sold. These items range from the ordinary to the exceptional. One unique item waiting for the right buyer this year is a striking vintage folding fan fireplace screen featuring beautifully pierced brass blades arranged in an expansive scalloped peacock design. Are Longaberger baskets more your cup of tea? They have those, too. Cups for tea? Yes, they have those as well.
The yard sale also raises money by offering members of the community and nonprofit groups the opportunity to purchase a 12×12 space for the morning. If you have been wanting to have a yard sale but are hesitant to have people come to your home this is a great opportunity to make that happen in a neutral location. Non-profit groups or charitable organizations have the opportunity to purchase a space to promote their group face-to-face with the public. Seller spaces require a $20 nonrefundable donation. Space for nonprofits is a $15 nonrefundable donation. The deadline to register for a space is Friday, October 9 at 4:30 p.m.
Members of the community are encouraged to come and seek out bargains or hidden treasures on October 10, 8 a.m. – noon at the Madison Library Lawn. A rain date of October 19 has been set.
