Update: As of 3 p.m. Sept. 10, the boil water advisory has been lifted. A series of samples collected and sent to a certified lab were absent of both total coliform and E.coli bacteria in the area where the boil water advisory is currently being lifted. Residents are encouraged to flush the water throughout their homes, restaurants and businesses.
Town of Gordonsville residents are under a boil water advisory following a water main break.
On Tuesday afternoon, a boil water advisory was issued for town residents following watermain breaks. The breaks were repaired, but the presence of E.coli in drinking water can occur during a water main break.
The advisory states residents should use boiled water or tap water for drinking and cooking purposes as a safety precaution. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
As a result of the advisory, both the Barbecue Exchange and Inwood increased their safety precautions, sanitizing items in boiling water and offering bottled water for guests. Patch Brewing opted to not serve food and The Ice House closed for the day.
At Gordon-Barbour Elementary School, water donations were received from Food Lion and the Walmart Distribution Center. The cafeteria team created a dedicated handwashing station with water from another school heated by hot plates and water fountains were closed.
The advisory was likely to remain in place for at least 24 hours. However, as of Wednesday night, the town was still waiting on clearance from the Virginia Department of Health regarding submitted water samples.
