Remember and honor

Memorial Day ceremony held at American Legion

Attendees at the Memorial Day ceremony at the Madison American Legion were treated to a visit from George Washington Monday.

Washington reenactor James Manship served as the guest speaker during the nearly hour long ceremony which remembers and honors those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for freedom.

“Memorial Day is to remember those who have gone before us to protect our liberties,” Manship said. “Remember the soldiers in uniform but also the greater army of wives and children who served at home.”

Manship spoke about Washington’s experience in the service and the creation of the Navy. He presented the Legion with a replica of George Washington’s Cruisers Flag with the motto “appeal to heaven.”

In addition to remembering all soldiers who have lost their lives in battle, the ceremony honored four Legionnaires who have passed over the past year–Henry Aylor, Alan Blacklock, Mike Horrocks and Gerry Stephenson.
