Grubb named 2025-2026 principal of distinction

Among 25 to receive honor

A local principal has been recognized as a principal of distinction.

Earlier this month, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) announced the 2025-2026 Virginia Principals of Distinction, the first-year competition of a recognition and professional development program. Among the 25 to receive the honor was Merilee Grubb, principal of Lightfoot Elementary School.

ā€œThis year’s Principals of Distinction are delivering on what high expectations and excellence looks like for every student,ā€ Superintendent of Public Instruction Jenna Conway said. ā€œThrough this program, and through their commitment to continuous improvement to meet the needs outlined in Virginia’s School Performance and Support Framework, these individuals are leading the way to provide high quality education and supports for every student.ā€

To be eligible for the Principal of Distinction, Level II endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK–12, a building-level administrator must have at least five years of experience as a building-level administrator in a public or accredited nonpublic school and have completed a formal induction program as a principal or assistant principal—as outlined by the Virginia Board of Education (VBOE) under the Virginia Administrative Code 8VAC20-23-620(F).

ā€œThis class of Principals of Distinction is truly inspiring,ā€ VBOE President Mashea Ashton said. ā€œWith innovative leadership represented in improving instructional outcomes and building strong culture, it is clear that Virginia has great schools.ā€

The selected candidates are chosen by the Virginia Principals of Distinction Selection Committee and have demonstrated strong leadership in student achievement, instructional practices and school culture. The candidates participated in a professional training symposium and completed a capstone project over six months. Emphasis was placed on evidence of impact on student outcomes.

Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Dan Hornick said the division is proud of Grubb’s accomplishment.

ā€œThis honor recognizes her outstanding leadership in advancing student achievement, strengthening instructional practices and fostering a positive school culture,ā€ he said. ā€œSelected through a competitive process, Mrs. Grubb completed a rigorous professional development program including a training symposium and capstone project. Congratulations [to] Mrs. Grubb on this well-deserved recognition and [her] continued impact on students and staff.ā€

The program is made in partnership with the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals, the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals, the VBOE and VDOE.
