Madison students head back to school next week

Carnival Saturday morning

Madison students will return to school next week.

This year’s theme is “every student matters, every moment counts.” Superintendent Anna Graham said division leaders and staff are proud of the progress made last year and are looking forward to building on that success.

This year brings lots of exciting updates, Graham said, including new math textbooks in all grades and a plan to raise pigs next spring at the high school as part of the agriculture program. Hands-on learning, student wellness and purposeful limits on screen time continue to be prioritized.

The school division has also formed a partnership with the Charlottesville Area Technical Education Center to increase career and technical education offerings for students and the already established partnership with Germanna Community College has been strengthened. Graham said more students will have the opportunity to earn an associates degree while in high school.

Madison County Public Schools will begin the year fully staffed. Graham said the division has welcomed “a fantastic group of new educators and support staff to our schools.”

Some of those staff members may be at the Back to School Carnival Saturday. The annual event brings community members and school families together to celebrate the start of the new school year. The carnival will be held Aug. 9, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Young Farmers Grounds.

Another celebration this year that will bring the community and school families together is the inaugural MCHS Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Weekend. The weekend will honor 10 inductees and one team inductee for their contributions to the high school while building community pride. The inductees will be honored during the football game Friday, Sept. 5 and during a dinner Saturday, Sept. 6. Tickets for the dinner are on sale and can be purchased by contacting the high school.

The first day of school is Tuesday, Aug. 12.
