More than 600 volunteers took to Madison County Saturday, working at 20 sites as part of the annual Madison Day event.

Created in 2019 by Karen Coppage, Madison Day places hundreds of volunteers at sites around the county performing beautification projects, small home repairs, yard work and other activities all in the name of sharing God’s love. The first Madison Day resulted in more than 200 volunteers completing 19 projects.
This year, approximately 275 volunteers from various organizations and 350 Woodberry students and staff members participated in the annual day of giving, completing work at 20 sites. According to Coppage, 17 of the work sites were residences. She said projects included building handrails on steps, repairing handicap ramps, replacing and repairing rotting doors, yard work and more.
In addition to volunteering, local companies, organizations, individuals and churches donated money and supplies to the Madison Day efforts. Coppage said Rappahannock Electric Cooperative once again had a team volunteering as well as made donations and Cardinal Home Center helped with materials and material delivery as it has for the past six years. New this year, Coppage said Piedmont Regional Realtors joined the efforts.
“Many churches had teams, along with MADSafe, Cowan Roofing, UVA Therapy, DisAbility Resource Center, Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Ace Collision Center, among others,” Coppage said. “The 4-H joined this year again as well.”
Not all volunteers head out to job sites. Coppage said the feeding team, led by Celine Pumphrey, kept the more than 600 volunteers well fed with help from the Wolftown Ruritan Club. Rose Park United Methodist Church conducted the Madison Kids program, allowing children of volunteers to participate in a variety of activities. Coppage said a group also delivered goodie bags to homeowners and visited with them throughout the day. The bags were provided by REC and filled with crafts homemade by local women and Girl Scout Troops.
Plans for Madison Day 2026 are already underway. Coppage said there is a waitlist for homes to serve as work sites.
