A new initiative aims to increase the arts in Madison County.
Last week, county resident Britt Shankle and supervisor Jim Jewett held an interest meeting to discuss the creation of a community theater program. At a school board meeting earlier this month, Shankle said the performing arts class slated for next year at the high school had been cancelled because the necessary capacity was not reached. She said her daughter, Charlotte, had expressed interest in the program. Shankle said performing arts education is needed in the community and the interest meeting was a way to begin addressing the need.
The community interest meeting was met with enthusiasm with attendees discussing the possibilities of an upcoming production in line with the 250th. Shankle said she’s hoping to create a program that will serve adults as well as children and students.
“I am hoping to re-invigorate the performing arts in Madison and support the schools in educational programming around acting and theater,” she said. “It’s always been a vital part of the community here, and I know it creates opportunities for children that go far beyond the classroom, and even beyond the stage.”
A second community meeting will be held June 2 at 6:30 p.m. at 414 N. Main Street, Madison. Anyone interested is invited to attend.
