To the Editor,
On Tuesday, April 21, there is a special election on redistricting (redrawing the maps) for Virginia’s congressional seats. I strongly urge you to get out and vote “no” on this referendum. Why? We do not want a one party commonwealth. And yes, Virginia is a commonwealth. In the Commonwealth, we draw our congressional districts apolitically (meaning politically neutral). This is not just the law, it is in Virginia’s Constitution. Next, voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around. Politicians should not be allowed to choose their voters. This referendum on the ballot would allow gerrymandering to silence the voice of the voters.
The current map, which was drawn by a nonpartisan commission, is 6-5 in favor of Democrats. If this referendum passes, the redrawn map is 10-1 in favor of Democrats. How is this fair? This redistricting referendum does not serve all Virginians and ends up disenfranchising and silencing millions of Virginians.
You can still vote early in person at the registrar’s office. Last day for early in person voting is Saturday, April 18. If you wait to vote on Tuesday, April 21, please report to your regular polling place and don’t forget to bring an ID in either situation.
Please get out and vote “no” on this redistricting referendum.
